Mary Ellen Mark: 25 Years Details
From Library Journal One can only hope that this collection of exquisitely beautiful black-and-white photographs, a catalog of an exhibition soon to open at New York's International Center of Photography, will expand the reputation of the prolific Mark beyond the constraining label of "photojournalist" to that of an accomplished artist deserving rank with the likes of Nicholas Nixon, Diane Arbus, and Garry Winogrand. This admirable work is filled with images of transcendent emotional power. A full page is devoted to each, thereby providing an unfettered view of Mark's sensitivity to texture and her enchanting compositions. Fulton's curatorial hand is evident in the book's organization, with sections centered upon themes of physical/mental confinement, "Living on the Edge," and portraiture--all utilizing samples of Mark's work among consistently varied subjects for 25 years. A final chapter is comprised of an odd and haunting grouping of her most recent photographs of circus performers in India. Highly recommended.- Douglas F.
